Prem Kumar Gangai Amaren (born February 26, 1979) is an Indian playback singer, composer, songwriter, actor, and comedian. He is the son of composer and director Gangai Amaran, and he is known for his comical performances in his elder brother Venkat Prabhu’s films. His stage name, Premgi, is actually a misspelling of Prem G. (the G referring to his father’s name). He is also famous for his catchphrase Enna Koduma Sir Idhu. (What is this atrocity, sir?) and Evvalavo phantom, that Panna mattoma (We’ve done so much, won’t we do this too? ), the former a modified version of a famous Prabhu dialogue from Chandramukhi (2005). His age is 43 years.
Career: Premgi Amaren
In 1997, Premgi Amaren planned to make his directorial debut with the film Wanted, starring Venkat Prabhu and S. P. B. Charan. The film, which starred Gangai Amaren and S. P. Balasubrahmanyam as comedians and Yuvan Shankar Raja as a music composer, did not finish filming.
Premgi began his career as an assistant to film music composer and his cousin Yuvan Shankar Raja, before becoming a playback singer, singing mostly the rap portions in Yuvan Shankar Raja’s compositions, before collaborating with other musicians. He also remixed some of his compositions for soundtrack albums while working with Yuvan Shankar Raja, the first being “Loosu Penne” from the film Vallavan.
He made his acting debut in Silambarasan’s Vallavan in 2006 as the heroine’s friend and then starred in his brother Venkat Prabhu’s directorial debut Chennai 600028 (2007) as Seenu. The film went on to become the year’s biggest summer blockbuster, cementing Premgi’s reputation as a comedic actor. He collaborated with his brother on his next film, Saroja, which earned him praise for his performance as Ganesh Kumar. He first appeared as a lead character in Venkat Prabhu’s Goa (2010), and then in Mankatha (2011) and Settai (2012). (2013). He made his Malayalam debut in North 24 Kaatham in 2013. Premgi Amaren plays the lead character in the upcoming Maanga and also composes the music. He is currently in Chennai 600028 II: Second Innings, a sequel to the super-hit film Chennai 600028.

He debuted as an independent music director in 2005 with Gnabagam Varuthe, a film starring his brother. Following that, he composed for Agathiyan’s Nenjathai Killathe and Thozha, in which he also played a leading role. In addition to film music, he composed music for the Planet Galatta II – Adra Sakkae episode on Singapore’s satellite channel, “Mediacorp Vasantham.”
Amaren wrote a song called “The One Anthem” with singer Suresh Peters as a tribute to Michael Jackson’s legacy.

Family: Premgi Amaren
Premgi Amaren is the younger brother of film director and actor Venkat Prabhu and the son of veteran director and musician Gangai Amaran. His uncle is film composer Ilaiyaraaja, and his cousins are Yuvan Shankar Raja, Karthik Raja, and Bhavatharini.
