New York City is very much alive, and so is its dynamic comedy clubs. Despite the closure of clubs like Dangerfield’s, the city continues to serve as the ideal breeding ground for comedic talent, both old and new. Here are some of the popular spots hosting comedy shows in New York.
Asylum NYC
On most Thursdays through Mondays, performances take place. Asylum Mainstage Presents, the house troupe, performs sketches and other things on Fridays with a different special guest comedian. The likes of North Coast & Baby Wants Candy frequently perform musical improv on Saturdays.
The Bell House
Since 2008, this club has been a mainstay in Gowanus. Its main hall seats more than 200 people, and there is standing room for an additional several hundred people to watch the biggest talents to emerge from the indie bar scene. The “Dan Joe Snowman Show” is a weekly talk show.

Carolines on Broadway
The basement club owned by Caroline Hirsch, which is located just north of Times Square, features out-of-town headliners from the worlds of traditional stand-up comedy and social media. Former bouncers from the venue are also well-known. This comedy club allows a minimum drink order of two.
Caveat
Performers of all colors and varieties who are ardent about their subjects are welcome at this Lower East Side venue with 120 seats. The weekly all-star improv group Raat Scraps performs on Sundays. Some of the club’s shows are live-streamed.
The Comic Strip
This is the old-school comedy club that hosted many comedy shows in New York. The Upper East Side establishment that launched the careers of Chris Rock, Eddie Murphy, Adam Sandler, and others continues to host stand-ups every night. During a performance, you are required to buy two food or beverage items.
Comedy Cellar
This club advertises great talent. However, attendees are instructed to place their phones in pouches so they cannot capture the action. Every Thursday, the website updates with the lineups for the following week. The Cellar and its sibling clubs Village Underground and Fat Black Pussycat, located around the corner on West Third Street, host up to 15 performances on the weekends in addition to eight concerts throughout the week. During a performance, you are required to buy two food or beverage items.
Gotham Comedy Club
This club has produced numerous TV showcases since it debuted in 1996 and is a favorite hangout for celebrities like Jim Gaffigan and Seinfeld during the weeks when they aren’t on tour. Tuesday nights provide the most dependable lineups owing to “ComedyJuice.” The bar’s minimum drink order is two.
Littlefield
This comedy spot has 100 seated rooms and 200 standing rooms. The Monday night “Butterboy,” hosted by Maeve Higgins, Jo Firestone, and Aparna Nancherla, with music by DJ Donwill, and the monthly Saturday performances of “Tinder Live With Lane Moore” are among its most popular stand-up and variety shows.
New York Comedy Club
New York Comedy Club has two locations on the East Side, having a number of nightly shows. The “Nice Try” comedy showcase is presented every Tuesday at the East Village venue. During a performance, you can buy food and drinks.
The Stand
The proprietors of this club, Patrick Milligan and the brothers Paul Italia and Cris, recently acquired an old Staten Island ferry boat to use as their next comedy venue. However, they currently hold numerous stand-up showcases and podcast recordings each night in the two rooms in their present location, to the west of Union Square.
