The BPL was formed in 2011 and the first season was held in 2012. It is monitored by the governing council of the league appointed by the Bangladesh Cricket Board. On January 18, 2012, the board of directors signed a 6-year contract for 350 crores with the Game on Sports Group to establish a franchise tournament.

The agreement gave the group exclusive management rights for the tournament. In the initial stages, the league was founded with six franchises. In the franchise auction, 13 companies participated in the bidding process, with six receiving the rights of each club. Later on, Rangpur Riders were added as the seventh franchise.

Comparison With Other Leagues
Bangladesh Premier League is still growing as a league. BPL still lags behind in comparison to other franchise leagues. In every aspect, it still needs a lot of improvements to come up to the level of IPL and Big Bash League. The governing council should bring in more famous players to the auction table which will attract more fans and hence the viewership of the league would increase comprehensively. With the viewership comes the cash lucrative deals with the broadcasting companies. This will lead to big profits for the league and also the popularity of the league across the globe. The total prize money of the BPL is $1.55 million which is very less when compared to IPL’s $500 million. But still, the league is in its early days and hopefully will grow in the coming years and come up to the level of other franchise cricket leagues.
